“What Love Can Do” the background story!
“What Love Can Do” is Heidi Vincent’s newest single. The song, an achingly beautiful country ballad on heartache and infidelity and it drops May 1, 2024 on streaming platforms.
Heidi originally wrote the song in 2011. She picked it back up and finished it on her Grandpa’s birthday April 13 in 2022. While in the 2023 pre-production process with Winston Hauschild (TreeHouse Studio Bowen Island), they co-wrote a new bridge that enriched the story.
“What Love Can Do” is the first half of a story of the perfect, innocent childhood promise to be together forever. It is born in the “spit & blood & stone” handshake. This song is about two childhood friends in a small town make a pact, grow up & marry and then who lose their way in the journey of love.
In 2022, I was binging Yellowstone and heard Whiskey Myers’ song “Stone,” googled the band and watched Cody Cannon, accompanied by Tony Kent, do an acoustic version of it on his YouTube channel. It was such a great song and it really inspired a more concrete direction for my song.
Song lyrics are transmitted/transported to me in movie format. Once I start to see the “movie” in my head, then lyrics pour out while I play around with guitar chords. In my hearts mind, I did see the intro to “Sweet Home Alabama” (Reese Witherspoon & Josh Lucas). I never get tired of watching that movie. The intro childhood friends, Dakota Fanning & Thomas Curtis out on that beach in the lightening storm, where the lightening makes beautiful glass sculptures in the sand from the intense heat.

I began the story there. The childhood friends make a pact by cutting a little spot in their palms with the beach rocks, spit into their bloody hands and make an everlasting promise to marry when they grow up in “What Love Can Do.”
But, contrary to the movie “Sweet Home Alabama” where the characters are allowed to heal, come full circle and reunite as their true love never died, my two lovers relationship in the song ends in confusion, betrayal and pain.
